Essential Driver Training (EDT)

WHAT IS EDT?

Essential Driver Training is a 12 lesson programme that will give you, the learner driver, all of the vital driving skills as you develop your ability and work to become a competent driver. You will improve your knowledge and understanding of road safety and will learn how to become a safe and socially responsible driver. The course consists of 12 one hour lessons and all lessons will be accounted for in your EDT logbook between you, your ADI and a sponsor of your choosing.

DO I NEED EDT?

If you have received your learner permit or first provisional licence after the 4th of April 2011 then it is mandatory that you complete the 12 EDT lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

YOUR SPONSOR

Before beginning the Essential Driver Training programme, the learner driver needs to nominate a sponsor who can monitor their progress throughout the 12 lessons. The sponsor must hold a full car driving license for at least two years but more importantly should have lots of driving experience so that the learner driver can benefit from their experience.

YOUR LOGBOOK

Your EDT logbook is a vital part of your Essential Driver Training as it keeps a record of all of your progress as a learner driver, lesson by lesson. It is an important document which you should keep safely and bring along to each driving lesson.

Your logbook provides an easy way of seeing what strengths and weaknesses you may have from an early stage in your learning.

After each lesson you, your ADI and your sponsor will fill out their own section of the logbook.

  • Your ADI will give feedback on how the lesson went and recommended actions for the learner to practise before the next lesson.

  • You, the learner driver will give a self-analysis of how the lesson was for you. After doing this you may realise that you have some questions for your ADI. These questions can be wrote down and dealt with during the next lesson.

  • Your sponsor will then fill out their own page noting what practise takes place between lessons and generally how they feel the learner driver is developing. Perhaps they may have questions for the ADI themselves.
